The Soroti Hospital Regional Referral Hospital administration has raised alarm over a significant increase in new hepatitis B cases being reported at their facility.
Dr. Athanasius Ariengu, the coordinator for emergency treatment, revealed that the hepatitis B clinic, which operates every Tuesday, is currently managing over 200 patients. This surge has led to frequent shortages of vital drugs, adversely impacting the suppression of patients’ viral loads.
Hepatitis B is a severe liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For most individuals, the infection is acute, lasting less than six months.

Furthermore, in some cases, it becomes chronic, posing severe long-term health risks. Chronic hepatitis B can lead to liver failure, liver cancer, or cirrhosis—a condition characterized by permanent liver scarring.
Common symptoms of hepatitis B include abdominal pain, dark urine, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, weakness and fatigue, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin). The growing number of cases underscores the urgent need for enhanced public health measures and sufficient medical supplies to manage and curb this infection.
In addition, Soroti Hospital calls upon health authorities and partners to provide additional support to meet the rising demand for treatment and ensure that all patients receive the necessary care to manage their condition effectively.
In conclusion, the community is also encouraged to get tested, vaccinated, and educated about Hepatitis B to prevent further spread. Additionally, together, we can combat this public health challenge and ensure a healthier future for all.
