Sevilla Appoints Diego Alonso As New Head Coach
Spanish club Sevilla appoints former Uruguay manager Diego Alonso as new head coach, the fourth coach in a year.
Sevilla has parted ways with coach Jose Luis Mendilibar and announced the appointment of Diego Alonso as new boss.
Sevilla bids farewell to former coach Mendilibar just after 28 matches in charge, due to their poor start and performance so far in the league.
Despite leading the club to an unexpected Europa League victory in the 2023–24 season, However, a decision to remove him from his managerial position ensued, following a poor start to the new campaign season.
Sevilla are in 14th place on the table, with eight points from their matches in the league competition. Leaving them just six places away from the bottom of the table as the international break approaches.
Diego Alonso Replacing Mendilibar, the former Uruguay player is no stranger to life in Spain.
Having played across top teams during my playing days, I played for the likes of Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Racing Santander, and Malaga.
His managerial career took him away from Europe.
Although his notable achievements with Mexican clubs Pachuca and Monterey earned him a chance at Inter Miami,
An underwhelming spell at the MLS side saw him win just seven times out of 28 matches.
Despite the poor record, he still secured the opportunity to lead Uruguay at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with his country failing to qualify for the knockout stages.
Sevilla Statements Following the Appointment of Diego Alonso as New Boss
“We are delighted to announce that Diego Alonso has reached an agreement for the Uruguayan to become our new coach until the end of the current season”.
In conclusion, Diego Alonso, 48, will now attempt to bring back action to the talented squad, resuming his position with immediate effect.
