KAMPALA, Uganda — Police in Kampala have launched a major crackdown on robberies, phone snatching, and drug abuse following a surge in crime and growing public concern over insecurity in the city.
The operations, conducted on March 23, were carried out across multiple divisions under the Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), marking the start of intensified enforcement efforts.
According to KMP spokesperson Rachael Kawala, the crackdown was prompted by increasing public complaints about rising criminal activity, social disorder, and safety concerns in urban communities.
Police say the operation targets criminal gangs involved in street robberies and phone theft, as well as drug-related activities linked to violence and lawlessness in Kampala.
Authorities added that the crackdown will continue in the coming days, with more arrests expected as security agencies work to restore order and rebuild public confidence.

Police have urged the public to cooperate by sharing information that could support investigations and help identify suspects.
“This is just the beginning,” Kawala said, emphasizing the force’s commitment to ensuring safety across the capital.
