The Gulu Chief Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, the National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president for Northern Uganda, who had been remanded on charges of inciting violence.
Dr. Zedriga was released on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, on a cash bail of Shs 1 million. The presiding magistrate, Augustine Alule Koma, also ordered her four sureties to execute a non-cash bond of Shs 10 million each.
In his ruling, the magistrate noted that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to justify continued detention, despite earlier objections raised by the state.

Dr. Zedriga was arrested from her home on January 15 and held in detention for several weeks before she was produced in court and charged. The state had opposed her bail application, arguing that her sureties were not substantial and that she could interfere with ongoing investigations.

However, the defense team maintained that the prosecution had not provided proof to support those claims and insisted that the accused met all legal requirements for bail.
Reacting to the court decision, the party’s Secretary General, Lewis Rubongoya, said the party leadership had traveled to Gulu to support Dr. Zedriga during the court process, describing her release as a positive step in the pursuit of justice.
Dr. Zedriga remains committed to complying with the court’s bail conditions as the case continues.
