MASISI TERRITORY, eastern DR Congo—Hostilities escalated sharply in eastern Congo on Tuesday after a senior spokesperson for the M23 rebel movement was reportedly killed in a pre-dawn drone strike targeting a convoy near the mineral-rich town of Rubaya.
Sources close to the rebels said the strike occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m., destroying at least one vehicle and killing several fighters. Among those killed was a figure identified by rebel sources as the group’s military communications chief, considered central to shaping its public messaging and strategic narratives.
Residents in nearby communities described scenes of panic and confusion as the explosion echoed across the hills of Masisi Territory. Security was tightened throughout the morning, with movement restricted in surrounding villages.

Military analysts say the operation reflects an increasing reliance on unmanned aerial systems by government forces targeting armed groups operating in North Kivu. In recent months, aerial surveillance and precision strikes have been deployed more frequently in contested areas.
Rubaya remains a focal point of conflict due to its coltan mines, which provide critical funding streams for armed groups. Control of the area has shifted repeatedly amid sustained fighting.

The development adds uncertainty to ongoing regional peace initiatives, with diplomatic efforts struggling to gain momentum as military operations continue.
Security analysts warn that the loss of senior figures can either weaken an armed group or trigger renewed offensives, depending on internal command dynamics. For now, eastern Congo remains volatile, with civilians continuing to bear the brunt of the conflict.
