Kampala, Uganda — April 29, 2026 — Authorities in Kampala have linked a series of fatal electrocution incidents in Kabalagala to illegal electricity connections, raising fresh concerns about public safety in urban communities.
Preliminary findings indicate that unsafe and unauthorized wiring exposed residents and pedestrians to live electricity, especially during rainy conditions when the risk is higher. The deceased has been identified as Dominic Olwoy, 35, who died after reportedly coming into contact with a live electric wire linked to an illegal power connection.

A Growing Urban Risk
Illegal electricity connections are increasingly common in densely populated areas of Kampala, where demand for power continues to rise. However, experts warn that such connections often bypass safety standards, making them extremely dangerous.
In wet weather, exposed wires can easily transmit electricity through water, increasing the likelihood of fatal incidents.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid illegal electricity connections and report any suspicious wiring in their communities.
“Illegal connections put lives at risk and must be avoided at all costs,” an official said.
Safety Measures for Residents
Residents are advised to take the following precautions:
- Report exposed or low-hanging electrical wires.
- Avoid contact with fallen cables.
- Keep a safe distance from flooded areas with power lines.
- Use only certified electricians for installations.
