Jamal Odur, a member of Parliament with a reputation for his legal expertise, has raised questions about the legitimacy of former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, holding his position as an opposition commissioner following reports of his defection from the National Unity Platform (NUP) to a newly formed party.
In a public address, Odur said Mpuuga’s recent change of political affiliation casts doubt on whether he still has the backing of the party that originally appointed him to the Parliamentary Commission. Odur argued that appointments tied to party representation demand clarity.
“Mpuuga no longer represents the party that appointed him. We need confirmation: does he still speak for the mandate he was given?” Odur asked, drawing attention to discrepancies between party alignment and institutional appointments.

He pointed out that under Uganda’s parliamentary framework, commissioners are nominated by political parties but serve in their capacities independently once elected. This raises questions about accountability when party allegiance shifts shortly after appointment.
In conclusion, let’s wait and see what the speaker will do about this issue to see whether Mpuuga remains in his position or it’s withdrawn from him.
