Authorities in Butaleja District are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 21-year-old student who was reportedly found hanging from a tree in Busaba Sub-county.
The deceased was identified as Opendi Donato, commonly known as Junior, a Senior Three student at Alliance High School Busolwe and a resident of Nagondo B Village in Mulagi Parish. According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson IP Johnson Moses Mugwe, the incident was reported in Nagondo B Village on the morning the body was discovered.
The incident was officially reported to authorities by the area LC1 chairperson, Muduwu Peter, after residents discovered the body at approximately 6:00am.
Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson IP Johnson Moses Mugwe stated that a resident heading to the garden reportedly came across the deceased hanging from a tree within the village before alerting family members and local leaders, who later informed police.

Police at Busaba Police Station opened a file of suspected suicide following the incident. Investigators, including homicide detectives, Scene of Crime personnel, and officers from Butaleja Central Police Station led by the officer in charge, later visited the scene to conduct preliminary investigations.

During the examination, officers reportedly recovered several items believed to be relevant to the case, including a rope, a handwritten note suspected to have been left by the deceased, and a Primary Leaving Examination results slip. Statements from witnesses and relatives were also obtained to support ongoing inquiries.
The body was later transported to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as police continue with investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
Authorities say investigations into the incident are still ongoing as police work to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Meanwhile, community leaders and police have encouraged members of the public to seek emotional support and guidance whenever faced with personal challenges. The deceased’s family, friends, and fellow students continue to mourn the tragic loss.
Police urged members of the public to seek counseling, guidance, and support from relatives, community leaders, or relevant authorities whenever faced with difficult life situations rather than resorting to harmful actions. The police force also extended condolences to the family and friends of the deceased during the difficult period.
