Uganda Airlines said Wednesday it will acquire two Boeing freighters to boost its cargo operations, a move aimed at supporting the country’s growing agricultural export sector.

Uganda Airlines, which was revived in 2019 after a two-decade hiatus, has been working to expand its operations and restore its reputation as a major player in the region’s aviation industry.

The airline said it has received approval from the Ugandan cabinet to purchase a B737-800 (BCF) and a B777-F from Boeing.

Furthermore, the acquisition is part of Uganda Airlines’ expansion plans, which include the purchase of additional passenger aircraft. In September, the airline announced plans to acquire six new aircraft, including four Airbus A320-200neo and two Boeing 787 Dreamliners.

Uganda’s agricultural export sector has been growing steadily, with exports of fresh produce such as flowers, fruits, and vegetables increasing significantly over the past few years. The country’s agricultural exports are valued at over $1 billion annually, with the majority going to Europe and the Middle East.

The new freighters are expected to play a critical role in supporting this growth by providing reliable and efficient transportation of perishable goods to international markets.

In conclusion, Uganda Airlines’ expansion plans are also expected to create new job opportunities and stimulate economic growth in the country. The airline said it expects to take delivery of the freighters in the coming months.
