LONDON: Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial-rule charges brought against the club by the Premier League, marking a major development in one of English football’s longest-running regulatory cases.
An independent commission found that City breached Premier League financial rules during a nine-season period covering 2009/10 to 2017/18. The findings relate to the club’s financial reporting, player and manager payments, UEFA financial regulations and Premier League profitability rules.
The commission also found City guilty on the majority of allegations concerning the club’s cooperation with the Premier League’s investigation.
According to the Premier League’s findings, the commission concluded that financial arrangements had the effect of artificially increasing declared revenue and reducing declared costs, with the overall financial impact put at more than £900 million.
The case began with a Premier League investigation and eventually led to 115 charges being brought against City in February 2023.
What happens to Manchester City now?
The verdict does not yet mean that Manchester City will be relegated, lose titles or receive a points deduction.
The Premier League has said sanctions will be considered separately by the independent process. The possible consequences therefore remain unknown at this stage.
Manchester City can also appeal the commission’s findings. The club has maintained that it denies wrongdoing and has indicated that it intends to challenge the decision.
The appeal deadline is October 2, 2026.
The outcome could therefore take considerably longer to resolve, with the sanctions stage and any appeal still to come.
For now, the headline figure remains striking: 114 charges found proven against one of the Premier League’s most successful clubs.
