Uganda People’s Congress party President Jimmy Akena has declared his intention to contest as a party president in the forthcoming general elections despite the court ruling barring him from the same.
The High Court in Kampala yesterday declared illegal, null, and void the decision of the UPC to nominate Akena for the office of party president for the period 2025 to 2030.
The ruling was delivered through email by Justice Bernard Namanya on miscellaneous cause no. 0148 of 2025.
Jimmy Akena told Uncovered Ug news reporters that “If it means that you are going to strip me of the UPC uniform, you will strip me, but you are not going to stop me from taking this message forward. I am going ahead to contest for presidency, and I want to make that perfectly clear, and I think within UPC there are masquerades, and I don’t think there is anyone who is as prepared as I am to run the race for presidency 2026. The matters have been highlighted in the ruling, and I am not going to parliament, but I am going for the president of Uganda.”

Addressing the media at the party headquarters in Kampala, Akena has welcomed the ruling, which he says recognized him as the party president, which for several years a section of party members has failed to do.
He has, however, vowed to go ahead and contest in the 2026 general elections, not for Member of Parliament, but rather as a presidential candidate.
In conclusion, Akena has also announced plans to hold the party’s Delegates’ Conference on July 26th in Kamdini in Oyam District, asking aggrieved party members to use it to resolve any sticking issues.
