Deadly protests have erupted across Iran, spreading to 111 cities as the economy collapses. Police and protesters killed as unrest over inflation and currency crash intensifies
There were violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces in several locations in Iran on Wednesday, as a wave of unrest sparked by the country’s economic crisis continued for an 11th day.
Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, reported the tragic death of two policemen who were shot and killed by armed individuals in the southwestern town of Lordegan.

Videos circulating on social media reveal a tense standoff between protesters and security forces, with gunfire audible in the background.
Footage from various areas shows security forces firing guns and tear gas into crowds of protesters, some of whom retaliated by throwing stones.
The unrest has expanded to an alarming 111 cities and towns across all 31 provinces, according to the US-based Human Rights Activist News Agency (HRANA).
HRANA reported at least 34 protesters and four security personnel have been killed during the unrest, with 2,200 protesters arrested. BBC Persian has confirmed the deaths and identities of 21 individuals, while Iranian authorities have acknowledged the deaths of five security personnel.
The Iran protests began on December 28, when shopkeepers in Tehran voiced their frustration over a significant drop in the value of the Iranian currency, the rial, against the US dollar in the open market.
The rial has plummeted to a record low over the past year, accompanied by soaring inflation of around 40%, exacerbated by sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program and issues of government mismanagement and corruption.
