The Nigerian musical icon, the late Fela Kuti, will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Grammys, nearly three decades after his passing at the age of 58.
In an exclusive interview with Uncovered Ug reporters, his son, Seun Kuti, said, “Fela has been in the hearts of the people for such a long time. Now the Grammys have acknowledged it, and it’s a double victory. ”.
However, receiving this award brings togetherness and balance to Fela’s story and legacy.

Furthermore, a longtime friend and manager of Fela, Rikki Stein, emphasizes that this Grammy recognition comes at a pivotal moment. “Africa hasn’t historically rated very highly in their interests.
I think that’s changing quite a bit of late,” he shares. The Grammys introduced the Best African Performance category in 2024, reflecting the growing global success of Afrobeats, a genre inspired by Fela’s distinctive sound.
Fela’s family, friends, and colleagues will be present at the Grammys to accept the award. Seun Kuti notes, “The global human tapestry needs this, not just because it’s my father,” highlighting the universal significance of Fela’s contributions to music and culture.
In conclusion, Fela Kuti will be the first African to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award, albeit posthumously. This accolade was first awarded in 1963 to American singer Bing Crosby. Other distinguished musicians receiving the award this year include Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, and Paul Simon.
