The Electoral Commission (EC) has commenced nominations of candidates for the Dokolo Woman MP by-election.
The two-day exercise, which will end today, Tuesday, commenced on Monday morning with the nomination of Jane Rose Adongo Elau Okello, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate. Erikwaine Ngobi, the Dokolo district Electoral Commission registrar who presided over the nomination, said all her academic documents have been vetted.
Other candidates include Sarah Aguti Nyangkori, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate; Dr. Esther Akullo Obot, an independent; and Dr. Rosemary Alwoc Ogwal from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party.

Speaking shortly after the successful nomination of their candidate, Rosemary Seninde, an official from the ruling NRM party, urged the people of Dokolo to vote for the NRM candidate, saying that’s the only way they will benefit from this government.
Seninde told uncoveredug news reporters that “the candidate we have presented to the people of Dokolo is the right candidate who will be able to fit in the shoes of the late member of parliament. But in addition, they will not regret it because the people of Uganda must remember, and particularly the people of Dokolo, that everything that is decided in parliament first starts in the NRM caucus, and if somebody is not sitting in the NRM caucus, it may not add a lot of value to the people of Dokolo. So if they vote for this lady, the NRM candidate, I want to assure them that she will be able to add voice to the two members who are representing Dokolo so that they can be able to achieve what they want.”.
According to the commission, the candidates will campaign for only seven days ahead of voting, which will take place on March 21.
In conclusion, the winner will replace the maverick late Cecilia Barbara Atim Ogwal, who succumbed to cardiac arrest at a hospital in India where she was receiving treatment for cancer.
