The race to replace departed Dokolo Woman MP Cecilia Ogwal is heating up after Dr. Esther Akullo Owor Otada Obot, a prominent Rotarian, declared interest.

However, Akullo is likely to tussle it out with Dr. Rosemary Alwoc, Ogwal’s daughter, who is being fronted by some leaders within the ruling National Ruling Movement (NRM) and opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Najjanankumbi faction.

Remember, in the 2021 general elections, Ogwal polled 32,223 votes to win the seat and was followed by NRM’s Janet Rose Elau Adongo Okello (16,880 votes), while UPC’s Sarah Aguti trailed with 10,460 votes.

Akullo is vying for the seat on the independent ticket to run a campaign that is as inclusive as possible. She says she wants to unite the people of Dokolo and be their voice within the Lango sub-region and nationally, regardless of political affiliations.

Furthermore, the 45-year-old enjoys support from influential figures in the sub-region, subscribing to different shades of political opinion. Whereas NRM has made inroads in Lango, a lot of people in Dokolo are UPC-leaning, and Akullo is certain to be acceptable because her father, David P. Obot, was a diehard Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) stalwart and staunch supporter of Ogwal before she shifted to FDC after sharply falling out with the Obote family.

In conclusion, other prospective candidates include Dr. Anna Grace Lalam, Beatrice Milly Abang, Lillian Auma Okullo, UPC’s Sarah Aguti Nyangkon, and NRM’s Janet Rose Adong Elau. Meanwhile, the FDC is also expected to front someone.
