President Yoweri Museveni has expressed his gratitude to his Algerian counterpart, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, for the progress made in strengthening ties between the two nations.

During their talks, the two leaders reviewed the implementation of cooperation agreements signed between Uganda and Algeria in various fields, including energy, tourism, agriculture, and education.

The remarks came after President Museveni met with Algeria’s foreign affairs minister, Ahmed Attaf, who was on an official visit to Uganda.

Furthermore, President Museveni welcomed the increase in trade between the two countries, particularly the rise in Uganda’s coffee exports to Algeria, which have grown from $13m to $16m.

Algeria is also seeking Uganda’s support for its own candidate, Selma Malika Haddadi, who is vying for the vice-chairperson slot.

He also praised the increase in scholarships offered by Algeria to Ugandan students, which has risen from 100 to 217. “I’m very happy with the message, and I thank President Tebboune,” President Museveni said.

The meeting also discussed regional and international issues, including the African Union agenda, the Middle East peace process, and the decolonisation of Western Sahara.

President Museveni assured his guest that Uganda would support Kenya’s Raila Odinga in his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship.

The meeting highlighted the growing ties between Uganda and Algeria, which have been strengthening their cooperation in various fields in recent years.
