Contract extension talks between Karl-Anthony Towns and the New York Knicks have stalled, with no agreement expected before the team begins training camp next week.
The two sides have held discussions throughout the offseason as the Knicks look to keep the core of the team that won their first NBA championship in 53 years. However, recent negotiations have made little progress.
Towns remains under contract for the upcoming season and is scheduled to earn about $57 million. He also has a player option worth about $61 million for the 2027-28 season.
Towns eligible for major extension
The 30-year-old center is eligible to sign a new four-year extension worth roughly $273 million, although there is currently no indication that the two sides are close to an agreement.
There is also no immediate deadline for a deal, meaning negotiations can continue during the season even if Towns enters training camp without a new contract.
The situation comes just months after Towns played an important role in New York’s championship run.
He averaged 20.1 points and 11.9 rebounds during the regular season and helped the Knicks defeat the San Antonio Spurs in five games in the NBA Finals. During the postseason, he averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists.
Knicks facing salary pressure
New York’s financial plans are an important part of the negotiations.
The Knicks have indicated they do not want to move beyond the NBA’s second luxury-tax apron, while several other key players also have future contract decisions approaching.
Josh Hart is eligible for an extension, while Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby can negotiate new deals next offseason.
Reports indicate the Knicks want to keep Towns in New York for the long term, but the financial terms remain unresolved.
For now, Karl-Anthony Towns will enter training camp without a new extension, leaving both sides with more time to continue negotiations as the new NBA season approaches.
The Knicks will begin their title defence later this year.
