Final-year students fear graduation delays as lecturer shortage disrupts learning.
Concerns are growing at Makerere University as Makerere veterinary students face weeks without lectures, raising fears over possible delays in their academic progress
The affected students, especially those in advanced years of study, say they have missed several essential classes, including practical and clinical training sessions. These are critical for their coursework and future professional practice.
According to the students, the crisis stems from a shortage of teaching staff. Several lecturers reportedly retired, while others left after their contracts expired or proceeded on study leave without being replaced.
Final-year students are the most worried, noting that the absence of lectures could affect their assessments and delay graduation. Some claim they have petitioned university authorities multiple times but have not received any feedback.

“We are supposed to be doing clinical rotations, but nothing is happening,” one student said, expressing frustration over the situation.

University officials have acknowledged the staffing challenges and say efforts are underway to recruit additional lecturers and restore normal learning.
The ongoing disruption has created uncertainty among Makerere veterinary students, with many fearing they may be forced to extend their studies if the situation is not addressed quickly.
