Motorists using the Kampala Northern Bypass should prepare for significant traffic disruptions as major maintenance works kick off on the 21-kilometre stretch tomorrow, December 28, 2024.
However, the government has launched this critical project to ensure the long-term durability of the bypass, a vital roadway that has eased congestion in Kampala since its opening in 2009.
According to General Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, the rehabilitation will target key sections between the Kisaasi and Busega interchanges. The works will include removing old asphalt, reprocessing the road base, and applying a new asphalt overlay.

Furthermore, to ensure safety, affected carriageway sections will be fully closed 24/7, with traffic redirected to opposite lanes. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes to minimise delays, as the Uganda Police Force and Stirling Civil Engineering will manage diversions to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
This maintenance follows the merger of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) with the Ministry of Works and Transport on December 23, 2024. The ministry now directly oversees the upkeep of the bypass.
General Katumba urged motorists to plan for increased travel times and adhere to safety measures during this six-month project. “We are committed to completing the works on schedule while minimising disruptions,” he assured.
In conclusion, the Northern Bypass remains a crucial infrastructure asset, and this project ensures it continues to effectively serve Kampala’s growing traffic needs.
