Traders at St. Balikudembe Market, widely known as Owino Market in downtown Kampala, woke up on Sunday to find part of the market structure demolished overnight by unknown individuals.
According to a statement released by the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), the incident reportedly occurred at around 10:00 p.m. on March 7, 2026.
Authorities say unidentified people accessed a building within the market and pulled it down using heavy machinery without obtaining the required demolition permit from the city authority.
The affected structure is located along Sebana Road near the Nakivubo Channel, an area that forms part of the busy commercial hub that supports thousands of traders.

KCCA described the demolition as illegal and reckless, noting that it was carried out secretly at night and without any authorization from the city authority.

Officials added that the destroyed building is part of a public market facility relied upon by many traders for their daily businesses.
The authority is now working with other government agencies to assess the level of damage and determine the circumstances surrounding the demolition.
Meanwhile, police have arrested the operators of two machines that were allegedly used during the operation. Investigations are ongoing to establish who organized and funded the demolition.
Authorities have vowed to hold those responsible accountable as inquiries into the incident continue. Traders at the market remain concerned about the future of the affected section as they wait for further communication from city officials.
