Uganda copyright law enforcement is entering a new era after the government confirms importation of advanced monitoring devices.
Uganda copyright law enforcement has taken a major step forward following Parliament’s approval of the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill 2025.
According to international media consultant Dr. Joel Isabirye, the government has already imported specialized devices to strengthen enforcement of the copyright law across the country. These devices will be installed in bars, entertainment centers, event venues and public gathering spaces.
How the Copyright Monitoring System Will Work
Uganda copyright law enforcement will rely on a combination of software and hardware systems. Dr. Isabirye confirmed that the system is part of a national copyright management infrastructure designed to track music usage in real time.
Meanwhile, authorities are mapping venues nationwide to identify where music is publicly performed.
“The government has developed a copyright management system where monitoring devices will be placed in locations that use music for public performance. The devices have already been imported. There will be both software and hardware. It’s going to be nationwide.
Currently, a national mapping of entertainment centres is ongoing. So that challenge of not being able to prove certain cases is something we are moving beyond, because this is a project we have been implementing.” he revealed.
Ending Copyright Infringement Challenges
Uganda copyright law enforcement has long struggled with proving infringement cases.
However, this new system provides clear evidence of music usage, improve legal enforcement, and Reduce disputes in royalty claims
Dr. Isabirye emphasized that Uganda is moving past the challenge of lacking proof in copyright cases.
How Will the Artists Benefit
The new copyright law will help artists benefit in a way that royalty collection will become more transparent. Further, both local and international artists will benefit and fair compensation will improve across the industry.
Therefore, Ugandan artists expect to change their lives through this new copyright law. The new devices introduced which are to be installed will ensure accountability and fairness.
