Former State Minister for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Isaac Musumba, has been sent to prison following his failure to repay a debt exceeding 160 million shillings.

The Commercial Court’s decision on Wednesday evening came after numerous warrants for his arrest had been issued.

Musumba’s troubles stem from a loan he took from businessman Charles Wakwale in 2023, promising to repay the amount within four days. However, he failed to meet this obligation, leading Wakwale to seek legal redress.

According to Wakwale’s lawyer, Dick Kisira, Musumba has consistently been evasive, often claiming he was out of the country on repayment dates.

After Wakwale was compelled to file a commercial suit against Musumba, Lady Justice Patience Tumusiime Rubagumya ruled in Wakwale’s favour, mandating Musumba to repay the borrowed sum along with the legal costs incurred by Wakwale’s legal team.

In a desperate attempt to avoid imprisonment, Musumba appeared in court with 10 million shillings in cash and requested a 21-day grace period to settle the remaining balance.

However, Wakwale opposed this request, expressing concerns that Musumba would evade his responsibilities once again.

Ultimate, the court ordered Musumba to serve six months in Luzira Prison as a civil prisoner unless he paid the outstanding debt.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the legal obligations that accompany financial dealings, regardless of one’s status.
