Communities in Hoima and Kikuube Districts have received a significant boost in healthcare and education services after CNOOC Uganda Limited handed over medical equipment, hospital furniture, school desks, and textbooks to local facilities.
However, the package includes 120 sets of medical equipment and furniture distributed to Buhuka Health Centre III (52 sets) and Kyangwali Health Centre IV (68 sets).
In addition, 11 primary schools in Hoima and Kikuube have received 400 desks and 880 textbooks to ease congestion in classrooms and improve learning outcomes. Each school received about 40 desks and 80 textbooks.
During the ceremony, Liu Xiangdong, the president of CNOOC Uganda Limited, said, “True development is not only measured by the oil we produce but also by the value we add to the lives of people living alongside our projects.”
Liu said that “by handing over this equipment, we aim to improve education and healthcare in our communities, in line with FOCAC goals and Uganda’s drive to reduce maternal and child mortality while easing pressure on social services.”
Local leaders welcomed the intervention as more than just charity but as a sign of partnership.
Peter Banura, the Kikuube District LCV Chairperson, praised CNOOC’s consistency in community investment.
Banura urged residents to ignore misinformation surrounding oil projects and said that “CNOOC is not only here to extract oil; they are helping us build better livelihoods by supporting health, education, and skills development. This is the kind of partnership our people need.”
Ernest Rubondo, the Executive Director of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), also commended the initiative, saying that oil and gas development should be about people as much as production.
“Today’s activity is a reminder that the oil and gas sector is not just about infrastructure and production, but also about people, communities, and shared progress,” he noted.
