Kampala, Uganda — April 17, 2026 — The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has raised concern over a growing number of illegal water connections across Uganda, warning that the practice is straining the national water supply system.
National Water and Sewerage Corporation said the surge in unauthorized connections is affecting water distribution, reducing system efficiency, and increasing pressure on existing infrastructure.
Pressure on Water Supply System
The utility warned that illegal connections are causing significant water losses and disrupting equitable distribution to paying customers.
It added that continued misuse of the system could threaten long-term sustainability of water services in several urban and rural areas.

Enforcement and Crackdown Measures
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) managing director, Silver Mugisha, said the utility has intensified monitoring operations aimed at detecting and disconnecting illegal users across its service areas.
Field teams have been deployed to identify unauthorized connections and restore compliance with water supply regulations.
Officials said those found responsible will face penalties under existing NWSC guidelines and national water laws.

- Reduced water pressure in some areas
- Frequent service interruptions
- Increased operational costs
- Uneven water distribution across communities
NWSC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring reliable and fair water supply across Uganda while stepping up efforts to eliminate illegal connections that threaten the system’s efficiency.
