Arsenal’s best defender, William Saliba, has agreed to sign a new contract of five years at Emirates Stadium until 2030.
However, the defender has been a key player in Mikel Arteta’s defense over the past three years, forming a good partnership with Gabriel in the defense department.
His persistence and consistency in the defense have made him one of the Premier League’s best center backs at the moment. Last season of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign, he only missed three matches.

His signing a new contract with the club has made him join those of Gabriel Magalhaes, Ethan Nwaneri, and Myles Lewis-Skelly in renewing their contracts.
Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta had three huge contracts to negotiate upon arriving in north London earlier this year: Gabriel, Saliba, and Bukayo Saka’s contracts were all due to expire in 2027.
There was always a risk regarding Saliba’s old contract situation—especially with whispers of Real Madrid’s interest. But that defensive security is something Arsenal has over Liverpool, who faces an uncertain future with Ibrahima Konate.
That Saliba-Gabriel center-back pairing has been a huge part of Arsenal’s success. Since it began in August 2022, Mikel Arteta’s side has become a regular title contender.
Arsenal’s backline has kept clean sheets in five out of their seven games this season—only Liverpool and Manchester City have managed to purge the backline.
Furthermore, Erling Haaland’s opener at the Emirates on Sunday is the only goal the Gunners have conceded from open play all term.
In conclusion, no Premier League defender has won more balls in the middle third of the pitch or kept more clean sheets than Saliba.
