News reaching our platform confirms that a prominent businessman, hotelier, and philanthropist, Garuga Musinguzi, aged 72, has died at Nakasero Hospital after a prolonged illness.
He was the founder and chairman of Garuga Resorts Beach Hotel on the shores of Lake Victoria, as well as the owner of several tourism and hospitality investments in western Uganda, including the now-famous Kyenjonjo-based Safari Lodge.
He also had significant interests in ranching, coffee farming, and transport and was one of the early investors who championed local ownership in the tourism industry.
Furthermore, Musinguzi, who has been battling cancer for several months, passed away in the early hours of the morning. Additionally, he was admitted to the upscale private hospital earlier this week in critical condition and succumbed despite medical intervention.
A firm believer in community development, Musinguzi invested heavily in education, rural electrification, and road access in his home district. He was a major backer of local schools and health centers and often funded bursaries for underprivileged children.
In the early 2000s, Musinguzi briefly dabbled in politics, championing economic empowerment and local investment.
“We have lost a visionary leader who believed in Uganda and in the power of homegrown development,” said a close associate who worked with him in the Uganda Private Sector Foundation. “Garuga was never shy about advocating for Ugandans to own their economy.”
His last public appearance was in late 2024 during a community fundraiser in Kanungu, where he urged youth to embrace agriculture and entrepreneurship.
In conclusion, family members will drop us the funeral arrangements for the late Garuga Musinguzi, and once it’s out, we shall update you.
