Kampala, Uganda — April 9, 2026 — Police in Katwe Division have arrested ten suspects linked to a criminal gang accused of carrying out violent robberies across several parts of Kampala, in a major breakthrough against organized street crime.

The suspects are believed to have been behind a series of attacks in Makindye, Kizungu in Salaama, Bunga, and Katwe, where victims were targeted for cash and mobile phones by assailants armed with pangas.

The operation followed the arrest of a suspected gang member, Olwo alias Tom, on April 5 along Mubaraka Road in Makindye Division. He was found riding a motorcycle, registration number UMA 979 HA, and is said to have provided critical information that led to the wider crackdown.

Acting on the intelligence, police conducted a pre-dawn raid on April 8 in Kapeeke Zone, Kibuye I Parish, where nine more suspects were arrested. Among those detained are Bogere Latif, also known as Musoga, and Turyahirwa Ivan, also known as Musiramu.

Security personnel also recovered four motorcycles believed to have been used in the robberies. Investigators suspect some of the motorcycles were stolen and deployed by the gang to facilitate quick escape after attacks.

Police say the suspects have since admitted to a number of crimes, including the theft of Shs350,000 from a motor vehicle in Kizungu, as well as multiple incidents of mobile phone snatching along Salaama Road. One phone suspected to have been stolen was recovered during the operation.

Authorities believe the group had been operating for an extended period, exploiting busy urban areas and using speed and coordination to evade arrest.

All suspects are currently being held in custody and will be taken to court once investigations are concluded.

Police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying operations against violent crime and have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity.
