Kampala, April 8, 2026—Grief and legal uncertainty surround National Unity Platform (NUP) member Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is seeking temporary freedom from Luzira Upper Prison to bury his wife, Edith Mufumbiro Katende, following her death after a prolonged cancer illness.
In a deeply personal letter addressed to Dr. Flavian Zeija, Mufumbiro pleaded for a humanitarian consideration of his situation, describing his request as a final obligation to his late spouse. He has been on remand since September 2025 and is currently facing multiple charges in ongoing criminal proceedings.
Mufumbiro identifies himself in the letter as Accused No. 8 in Criminal Case No. 1363 of 2025, with additional proceedings under Criminal Case No. 147 of 2026. Among the charges he cites are unlawful drilling before Her Worship Damalie Aguma Asimwe and incitement to commit an offense before Her Worship Ainembabazi Doreen, the Chief Magistrate. He is scheduled to reappear in court later this week.
In her final moments, his wife made a heartfelt request—to have him present and to be laid to rest by him.
“It was her final and most earnest wish,” Mufumbiro wrote, noting that the request was made in the presence of family members as her condition worsened.

The appeal calls upon the judiciary to exercise compassion within the framework of the law. Mufumbiro specifically asked that the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court be guided to grant him temporary bail to attend the burial.
“I seek not to evade justice,” he wrote, “but to honor it in its most human form—by allowing me to perform this final duty for my wife.”
He further assured authorities of his willingness to comply fully with any conditions attached to his release.
The letter was copied to several judicial stakeholders, including the principal judge, the director of public prosecutions, and his legal team at Alma Associated Advocates.
As of publication, no official communication had been issued by the judiciary regarding the request, leaving the matter pending amid growing public attention.
