News reaching our platform confirms that the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has finally confirmed the start of the mass enrollment and renewal exercise of the national IDs across the country.
Addressing the Uncovered UG Media team today, Wednesday, 14th May, 2025, Ms. Rosemary Kisembo, the Executive Director of NIRA, revealed that the double exercise will commence on 27th May, 2025, with enrollment taking place from Monday to Saturday.
Kisembo confirmed that the National Identification Register contains biographic and biometric records of 27.7 million Ugandans.

In August 2022, the Cabinet approved the mass enrollment and renewal exercise to renew a total of 15.8 million cards that are expiring in June 2025, with many already expired.
She says that another goal of the exercise is to register 17.2 million Ugandans, emphasizing that citizens have a crucial responsibility to present themselves at the nearest registration centers with the necessary documents to either register for or renew their national IDs.

Kisembo told our reporters that “I urge the public to actively encourage participation among family members and friends of all age groups—including infants, teenagers, and the elderly—in the ongoing exercise.”
Kisembo has also noted that the new national ID incorporates enhanced security features such as multiple laser images (MLI), a machine-readable zone (MRZ), QR codes, and 2D barcodes.

In conclusion, the upgraded ID will facilitate both online and offline verification, support digital signatures, offer secure credential access, and integrate with eGovernment services, mobile devices, and physical authentication
