The lowered speed limits, as low as 30 km/h, have been met with harsh criticism from road users, who deemed the system to be doing more harm than good.
Furthermore, vehicles that fail to comply with the guidelines are flagged and issued automated tickets, which are sent to the vehicle owner via email or SMS. The vehicle owner has 72 hours to face a 50% surcharge.

After days of dissatisfaction, the Uganda Ministry of Transport has halted the system, effective at midnight on June 11, 2025.
The system comprises automated number plate recognition cameras designed to detect traffic violations, including speeding and red light offenses.
In conclusion, Gen. Katumba Wamala will issue a detailed statement today outlining the way forward. In the meantime, we urge all road users to continue driving responsibly and observing traffic rules.
