National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya has raised alarm over what he describes as a disturbing incident involving armed security personnel allegedly targeting his vehicle just a day after his nomination to contest for Member of Parliament for Kampala Central.

In a statement posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account, Rubongoya said his car was followed and later surrounded by heavily armed men moving in a drone commonly used by security operatives on Monday afternoon near Kisaasi. According to him, the men forcefully opened the vehicle, only to find it empty.

“Thankfully, I was not in the vehicle at the time,” Rubongoya wrote. “They searched it and found nothing. Disappointed that I wasn’t in, they asked the driver, Comrade Norbert Ariho, for my whereabouts. He said he did not know. They drove off.”

Rubongoya said the incident followed suspicious activity the previous day when “some soldiers took pictures of my vehicle and were seen frantically making calls” as he left the NUP party offices in Kavule.

While no official statement had been issued by security agencies by press time, Rubongoya strongly condemned the conduct, saying such actions are meant to intimidate opposition figures.

“WE ARE NOT CRIMINALS,” he emphasized in capital letters. “If you suspect any of us of committing any offense, summon us to the police instead of waylaying us and behaving like criminals.”

In conclusion, David Lewis Rubongoya, a key figure in the opposition party led by Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), was formally nominated on Sunday to run for Kampala Central MP in the upcoming 2026 elections.
