The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that the Karuma Bridge along the Kampala-Gulu highway will be reopened for all means of transport on Monday.
However, it’s remembered that the bridge was closed on 10th March shortly after it had reopened to pave the way for full reconstruction works.
The ministry told Uncovered Ug journalists that “The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) is pleased to inform the public that Karuma and Ayago Bridges along the Kampala-Gulu Highway will be reopened to all traffic on the morning of Monday, 14th April 2025.”

“This follows the successful installation and curing of expansion joints. These are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads, thereby maintaining its structural integrity and extending its lifespan.”
The installation of guardrails, street lighting, river training works, cat’s eyes installation, and painting of structural steel plate girders under the bridge will continue. However, it will not affect traffic flow.
Karuma Bridge lies along the major highway connecting the northern and southern halves of Uganda, as well as being the transit route between the coastal ports of Mombasa and Dar es Salaam and South Sudan.
In conclusion, the Karuma Bridge is very vital for trade and travellers to and from northern Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as South Sudan.
