Kampala, Uganda — April 10, 2026 — Former Karamoja Affairs Minister Agnes Nandutu has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty in the high-profile iron sheets scandal involving government relief items meant for vulnerable communities in Karamoja. The court also banned her from holding public office for ten years.

The ruling was delivered by the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court, which also ordered that the time she has already spent on remand be deducted from her final sentence. In addition, the court banned her from holding public office for a period of ten years.

Court ruling and penalties

The trial judge, Jane Okuo, stated that the offense was serious and involved abuse of public resources intended for vulnerable groups. The court further ordered that all recovered iron sheets be returned to government custody.

Emotional plea for leniency

Before sentencing, Nandutu made an emotional appeal to the court, asking for forgiveness from the people of Karamoja, the president, and her constituents.

She expressed remorse and asked for mercy, saying she regretted her actions.

Nandutu also requested a non-custodial sentence, citing health challenges, including lung-related complications that she said sometimes cause her to lose consciousness.

She further told the court that she is a single mother of seven children and also takes care of her elderly mother, aged 81.

Prosecution case

According to prosecutors, Nandutu was allocated about 2,000 iron sheets, reportedly intended for landslide victims. She allegedly accepted the allocation and facilitated their collection.

On June 23, 2022, she reportedly provided transport funds and instructed her assistant to collect the iron sheets from the Office of the Prime Minister stores.

Sentencing decision

While the defense asked the court to consider a lighter punishment, the prosecution had pushed for a stronger sentence of at least five years in prison, arguing that the offense warranted a deterrent penalty.

Ultimately, the court imposed a four-year sentence, alongside additional restrictions and restitution orders.
