KAMPALA — The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has dismissed claims linking him to the recent demolition of structures around St. Balikuddembe Market, popularly known as Owino Market.
In a statement issued Thursday, Tayebwa clarified that although he once held a lease for a plot in the Nakivubo area, he relinquished ownership after the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) acquired the land for public purposes.
According to Tayebwa, he obtained the lease legally in 2018 after following the required procedures and paying all necessary fees.

However, when he later submitted building plans for approval, KCCA reportedly informed him that the land was needed for strategic public activities. The authority offered compensation, which they accepted.

Tayebwa said KCCA took possession of the land about three years ago, meaning he no longer has any interest in it.
He stressed that he has no legal authority to evict anyone or demolish structures on land he does not own.
Tayebwa also rejected claims that he acquired the land due to his current position, noting that he obtained the lease years before becoming deputy speaker of the Parliament of Uganda.
