President Yoweri Museveni has launched a UGX 23 billion project to upgrade the Jinja Airfield, a strategic move aimed at boosting Uganda’s infrastructure, enhancing tourism, and improving regional connectivity.

The project, set to be completed within 15 months, will see the development of the airfield’s runway, taxiway, and apron to international standards. The upgrade is being undertaken by a joint venture between Gofar Investment and MJ Engineers and Contractors.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Museveni emphasised the importance of the project, highlighting Jinja’s potential as a transportation hub and gateway for tourists.

“The upgrading of the Jinja Airfield is a critical component of our efforts to transform Uganda’s economy,” Museveni said. “It will enable tourists to reach their destinations quickly and efficiently and will also facilitate the transportation of goods and people.”

The First Deputy Prime Minister, Rebecca Kadaga, appealed to the President for an additional 10 acres of land to further expand the airfield and accommodate the growing demands of an international airport.

“The people of Jinja have long dreamed of having an international airport, and this project brings us closer to that vision,” Kadaga said.

Fred, Byamukama told Uncovered Ug news reporters that “The upgrading of the Jinja Airfield will significantly boost the tourism sector, as tourists will no longer face challenges travelling from Kampala to Jinja by road.”

In conclusion, Fred Byamukama, the state minister for works and transport, emphasised the project’s potential to enhance tourism.
