Manchester United have decided to sack Dutch manager Erik ten Hag, who has been in charge of the Red Devils for three seasons, following a meeting in London of the club’s top brass.
After saving his head in previous seasons, the Red Devils’ poor start to the 2024-25 season has led club officials to sack the former Ajax coach.
Ten Hag arrived with a strong reputation after bringing Ajax back to the top level on the European stage with talented players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthis De Ligt, and Andre Onana.

Despite getting off to a good start in his first season in Manchester, his time at Old Trafford has been marked by ups and downs, and his job has always been under debate.
“Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager. Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024. We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future,” reads the statement.
The Dutchman managed to snatch an FA Cup from city rivals Manchester City as well as lifting an EFL Cup in 2022–23, but has failed to return Manchester United to the top flight.
After seven games, the Mancunians are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table with just eight points, and in Europe, their situation is not the best either after two draws with Porto and Twente.
In conclusion, the club announced that Van Nistelrooy will replace the former Ajax coach as interim coach. “Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, while a permanent head coach is recruited,” reads the statement.
