Neymar Jr. overthrows Pele as Brazil’s all-time top scorer after netting a brace against Bolivia in World Cup qualifiers.
Neymar Jr. has overtaken the legendary Pele to become Brazil’s all-time top goalscorer after scoring twice in his national team’s 5-1 win over Bolivia in a World Cup qualification match in the Amazon city of Belem.
The Al Hilal striker advanced to the number one spot for the Brazilian national team after overtaking the three-time world cup winner’s career total of 77 goals on Friday.
Neymar now records 79 goals in 129 appearances for the Brazilian team, behind the country’s all-time leading record,
Brazil’s women’s forward Martha, who has 151 goals in 171 appearances,
Furthermore, he led Brazil to the Confederation Cup title in 2013 but is yet to lead the country to a World Cup victory, reaching the quarterfinals twice in 2018 and 2022 and a semifinal in 2014, when they suffered a humiliating trashing of 7 goals to 1 by Germany at home.
Neymar was absent during Brazil’s 2019 Copa del Rey victory due to injury and was present in the losing squad for the 2021 edition of the tournament.
Neymar Jr. told uncoveredug reporters that “I never imagined reaching this record; I want to say I am not a better player than Pele. I always wanted to make my own story and write my name in the history of Brazilian football and the national team, and today I did that.”.
However, Pele’s foundation’s congratulatory message to Neymar read, “Congratulations, Neymar Jr., for surpassing the King of Goals for the Brazilian national team in official FIFA matches”.
In conclusion, Pele suffered from cancer and died at age 82 on December 29 in Sao Paulo.
