Manchester United have demoted Darren Fletcher from the role of technical director to first-team coach. Fletcher was appointed to the executive role in March 2021, working alongside football director John Murtough.
The Scot had spent more than 20 years with United as a player, making more than 300 appearances and winning five Premier League titles.
But since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival as United’s new controlling co-owner, there have been questions over Fletcher’s future. Jason Wilcox was appointed technical director in April, with no mention of his predecessor.

Now it appears that Fletcher has been kept on by Ratcliffe but has moved to a different role instead. And it is a change that would appear to be a demotion from his previous job.

According to The Athletic, Fletcher has been shifted from his previous technical director job to a role as a first-team coach. It is claimed he will be tasked with providing a link between academy players and the senior team.
Fletcher’s demotion follows the appointments of René Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy as assistant managers to Ten Hag, while Andreas Georgson has also arrived as a first-team coach. Ten Hag has previously spoken highly of Fletcher’s work as an academy player.
“We loan such players to let them develop and make progress. To bring them back—that is the aim of a loan. We are really strong on them in the matter of the way we mentor them,” the United boss said when asked about Amad’s successful loan at Sunderland.
“So we follow them, and we have communication throughout the season, especially with Darren Fletcher. He invests a lot in such processes, and the aim is to bring them back as a better player with better experience.”
Club chiefs are hoping that the restructure of the coaching staff will help Ten Hag bounce back from a difficult second campaign. Sporting director Dan Ashworth highlighted the changes as a key part of United’s new strategy.
“Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men’s first-team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is an important part of that,” Ashworth said when Hake and Van Nistelrooy arrived.
