News reaching our desk states that security forces in Kanungu District have arrested a man who was seen in a viral video declaring his intention to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni.
The suspect has been identified as Esau from Kamutungu Village, Nyakatunguru Ward, in Kihihi Town Council.
In a 3-minute, 39-second video posted on Sunday, May 25, Esau appeared in a forest setting wearing civilian clothes, camouflage trousers, and tan military boots and holding a machete. He announced the launch of a mission aimed at removing Uganda’s long-time leader.

“The time for change is now—whether people want it or not,” he declared, calling on Ugandans to prepare for a formal announcement “within 48 hours.”
Furthermore, Esau stated that his motives were not rooted in hatred or a desire for political power but accused President Museveni of blocking progress in the country. He warned the president and other leaders to brace for dramatic developments, suggesting that both Uganda and the world would witness major change.

On Monday, a combined force of UPDF soldiers and police officers raided Esau’s residence and arrested him without resistance. Witnesses reported that during the arrest, he referenced Genesis 27 from the Bible, a passage associated with struggle and the quest for blessings.
Gaddie Rugaaju Ahimbisibwe, the Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner, confirmed the arrest, noting that Esau is currently held at Kihihi Police Station and is being questioned.
In conclusion, authorities have not yet disclosed the specific charges, though he may face allegations related to incitement, threats of violence, or terrorism.
