News reaching our Uncovered Ug media team confirms that former Chief of Military Intelligence, Major General James Birungi, has been arrested and detained at Makindye Military Police Prison.
However, the arrested general is set to face trial before the General Court Martial on multiple charges, including treason, corruption, terrorism, murder, and other offenses.
Credible sources told Uncovered Ug news reporters that “Birungi’s arrest follows findings emerging from an ongoing high-level board of inquiry led by Deputy Chief of Defence Forces Lt Gen Sam Okiding, which was set up to investigate alleged breaches within UPDF intelligence and counterterrorism operations.”

“This is not an isolated arrest,” a senior security official familiar with the matter told Uncovered Ug journalists on condition of anonymity.
“It comes in the wake of deep internal reviews triggered by the board of inquiry, which has uncovered serious irregularities linked to intelligence manipulation, operational funding abuse, and misconduct at the highest levels.”
Furthermore, the board of inquiry, established earlier this year, was tasked with probing allegations that elements within the UPDF had fabricated or exaggerated bomb threats in Kampala, potentially to access operational funding or cover other illicit activity.
In conclusion, General James Birungi was arrested on Friday night before being escorted to Makindye Prison. Additionally, updates about the general’s arrest will be shared soon
