News reaching our desk confirms that President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr. Charles Olaro as the Director General for Health Services at the Ministry of Health.
Dr. Olaro has been serving in the role as acting personnel since November 2024; however, he has taken over permanently after Dr. Henry Mwebesa’s working contract ended.
The Ministry of Health thanked Dr. Olaro on X, saying, “Congratulations, Dr. Charles Olaro, on your appointment as Director General of Health Services.”

Furthermore, Mwebesa as chairperson of the Health Service Commission. They noted he previously served as director of clinical services and stepped into the acting role in November 2024.
Before this, Dr. Olaro worked as director of curative services at the Ministry of Health. Additionally, he spent eight years at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital, joining as medical superintendent in 2008 and later becoming a senior consultant surgeon and hospital director.
From April 2001 to June 2008, he served as medical superintendent and consultant surgeon at Arua Regional Referral Hospital.

Between 1992 and 2006, Dr. Olaro held roles as a medical officer special grade, senior house officer, and medical officer at Arua, Mulago, and Lacor Hospitals.
In conclusion, this appointment strengthens leadership and development in Uganda’s health sector as the country faces ongoing challenges of diseases like Ebola, Mpox, and Covid-19, among others.
