In a tragedy accident incident, seven mourners as they were travelling for a burial using a boat, drown in lake Kyoga and they died instantly

Tragedy struck yesterday evening when seven people drowned in Lake Kyoga after a fishing boat capsized near Amolatar. Authorities confirmed that all seven bodies were later retrieved.

The victims—four women and three men—were among 36 passengers travelling from Muchora Abino, a village in Acii Sub-county, to Kiryanga village to escort their Protestant church catechist, Alfred Oduno, to the burial of his sister, Joyce Abuni.

Amolatar District Chairperson Geoffrey Ocen said the accident occurred in a submerged area of the lake where logs remain hidden hazards.

According to eyewitnesses, the victims were traveling on a small wooden boat that overturned due to strong winds.

Amolatar District Chairperson Geoffrey Ocean told Uncovered Ug news reporters that rescue teams responded quickly, but unfortunately, all passengers drowned before help arrived.

“The boat hit a log approximately 400 meters from the shore, causing it to overturn. Ten survivors, including three in critical condition, were admitted to Amolatar Health Centre IV and are now stable. The police marine unit, together with local fishermen, conducted a search, but no bodies had been recovered at the time,” Ocen added.

The community has been left in shock, with local leaders urging fishermen to wear life jackets and avoid overloading boats.

In conclusion, drowning incidents are frequent on Lake Kyoga, prompting renewed calls for stricter safety measures.
