Former US president Barack Obama has sharply criticized what he called “clown show” politics in a scathing interview targeting Donald Trump and his leadership style
In an interview posted Saturday with YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen, the 64-year-old former president said he believes the majority of Americans disapprove of the actions and rhetoric of Trump and his followers, which often demonizes and personally insults political opponents.
Obama said he believes the rhetoric is used because it gets attention and is a distraction, telling Cohen that Americans “still believe in decency, courtesy, and kindness” despite ”this sort of clown show that’s happening in social media and on television, and what is true is there doesn’t seem to be any shame about this among people who used to feel you had to have some sort of decorum and a sense of propriety and respect for the office.”

Obama drew a contrast with Trump’s willingness to deploy federal force domestically, saying that while he could have “simply unilaterally ordered the military” into states that opposed him, he believed doing so “is contrary to how I think our democracy is supposed to work.”
Looking ahead to the midterm elections, Obama said Democrats have a political opening, arguing that “the folks that we are fighting politically—the current White House, this administration, and their enablers—they’re behaving so badly, doing such crazy stuff, that it shouldn’t be hard for our side to coalesce around the areas where we agree and focus on that.”
Obama emphasized that electoral victories must translate into governing power, saying Democrats need to secure “working majorities to actually pass laws and to implement those laws and to make things happen.”
He also warned that Democrats should not abandon their norms in response to Trump, telling Cohen, “If that’s how we fight, then we lose what we’re fighting for.”
